Creating Through Walls

For the puzzle today I wanted to construct the challenge using walls instead of drawing out the route. Similar to the first puzzle, I started with a small wall structure on the right hand side. I was moving house the last couple of days so I wasn’t able to get a puzzle done and blog written.

Labyrinth Puzzle Rules:

  • Enter from one door, exit from another

  • Every tile must be crossed exactly once

  • Moves are made orthogonally

  • Walls cannot be passed through

What’s interesting about this wall structure is that it forces players to go through four squares in a specific way. When placed next to the edge of the puzzle it really constrains player movement within the labyrinth. If the player enters from the left hand side they will exit and must go down to account for the trapped square. Other singular wall constraints can suggest room or route structures to the player but this one is fairly self contained.

So the puzzle has been constructed by accounting for this wall structure. After figuring out the placement of these walls I then considered the route. For this I thought about segmenting the puzzle in half to account for the wall structure.

I’m not as happy with the third entrance placement because I’m not actually sure that the puzzle has a unique solution anymore (it was getting late last night when I wanted to post this blog). I think this speaks to not having enough time to properly test but also when it’s just me testing the puzzles I think in a particular way that’s difficult to get out of.

Having someone else test the puzzles would show me alternate routes that I’ve missed…or taking a little bit more time to test the routes out…
